Why I should like …baseball

Baseball SmashBeing open-minded and accepting is a great thing. Simply because I don’t like something doesn’t mean no one else is allowed to like that thing. People are free to enjoy whatever makes them happy with very few exceptions. I like to think that I am open minded and accepting of other people’s tastes. However that same mind closes up when it comes to the game of baseball.

Seriously, how many times can you watch the same thing over and over? How many times can you get excited about homeruns or a strikeout? It makes me so mad when I see people get paid millions of dollars just to jog to first base and get thrown out rather than run with effort and be called safe. It makes me even more mad to see players deliberately dive for balls when they can catch them without diving…Or when they catch the ball then they dive, only to be called a “diving catch”. Its not a team sport because it doesn’t involve teamwork. The only thing remotely entertaining about the sport is watching the creative ways that the players manage to get injured, like running into each other in a giant open field or slamming into a wall. WHY DO THE COACHES WEAR UNIFORMS??

Whew. But I shouldn’t be so unaccepting. If I can’t like baseball then I should try to come to terms with it. So here are some reasons that I should like baseball.

  1. Heritage - Baseball has a long and storied history that goes beyond the scope of the game itself. Baseball helped raise the morale of Americans through wars and depressions.
  2. Creates Jobs - How can you hate something that creates so many jobs for athletes who have no other means to earn wages?
  3. Long Seasons - There are 162 games in a season. There’s just…so much baseball. Gotta love it.
  4. Steroids - With such loose restrictions against performance-enhancing drugs, baseball gives its players unprecedented opportunities to better themselves and perfect their games.
  5. Third base coach - What a great thing, a coach whose sole responsibility is to tell others to keep running or to stop. What a great idea. I can’t say enough about it.

…Forget it. I’d rather watch my own body be slowly eaten by ants then watch a game of baseball. Maybe one day I can learn to accept the game, but until then I’ll just keep my television off during the summer.

[…] Another problem they have is they don’t cater at all to the fantasy football fan.  This is a HUGE mistake.  They show scores in the top right corner from time to time (you know its update time when they have the robot sounds), but they never show any NFL stats.  They do give us baseball stats occasionally (I don’t need to repeat Funksysteme’s feelings towards baseball, do I?)  Being a fantasy football addict, I need to see my stats.  I think a lot of football fans feel the same way (there were 12.5 million fantasy owners last year [FSTA]).  So I change it to CBS as often as I can.  Honestly, I wish the Eagles were an AFC team this year so I would never have to watch their presentation. I love it how people can be liked or disliked based on how hard they make their job look. The harder it seems theyre working, the more they get paid, I guess. I also like it when people don’t run like the dickens in the outfield. The outfielders that try are the centerfielders, the one’s who dont try but have skill play right field, and the ones that plain stink play left. It’s awesome.

i am not sure you are open to other peoples tastes. I am upset that you are ragging on driving for no reason. It is quite fun and I am sure that you know of that from the holes in your pants near your knee.
