Dealing with Stray Cats

We recently had some self-invited visitors at the Wellington Estate. If you can read this, trust me, I’m not talking about you. A small family of black cats took up residence under our shed. At one point there were four cats, one mother and three kids. This begs the question, where the baby daddy at? I can’t answer that.

After about a week of the ‘ignore it and it’ll go away’ approach, we were helped out by a kind neighbor who is also a cat owner. She had a greater sense of urgency because she knew how this problem could grow out of hand. We both agreed that the SPCA wasn’t the way to go because we didn’t want to give them a death sentence. No offense to the SPCA, I know that they don’t kill animals out of the coldness of their hearts, but we were willing to sacrifice do a little more for the cats.

Our friendly neighbor was able to talk to her cats’ veterinarian. They setup a plan to take the kittens and make sure that they are adopted. Fine by us, its nice to have a neighbor with initiative. The cost was $80 per cat to get them neutered, but the mother would need to be released back under our shed because she is too old to be domesticated.

Those of you willing to invest a little money into making sure that any animals you come across aren’t put to sleep, there are ways to do it. Talk to a veterinarian about your options. I, on the other hand, do what I always do when I see a problem. I took out my camera. Here are some shots of the kittens which are now under the care of a friendly veterinarian.
